Wall preparation for tile installation

No step-by-step instructional is percent exhaustive. Every project is different, and in your own home, you will inevitably encounter something not covered by this or any tile tutorial. This one is key. First things first, what exactly is a subfloor?

Two primary types of subfloor: wood and concrete. Both suffer from the same tile-killing issue: movement. Wood moves and flexes with humidity and changes in temperature; concrete can move depending on humidity, moisture, soil movement, and temperature.

Remove any staples and drive down any screws or nails that are sticking up too far. Install a cement backer board to set a good base for your tile and prevent any movement-related cracking of tile or grout.

Backer board is screwed down to wood subfloor using specific backer board screws and mortared down with tile adhesive mortar plywood subfloor. Remember to tape and mortar the joints between the pieces of backer board.

Crack prevention membrane is mortared down on both surfaces. This membrane also acts as a waterproofing membrane and is a helpful addition in a wet area, a second floor, or a plywood subfloor application. A notched trowel is used to spread the mortar at a degree angle to the plywood subfloor. The recommended patch item varies based on the size of the crack to be filled. Use a floor scraper to remove any loose debris.

For old adhesives or mortar, this may require some elbow grease and possibly a grinder to remove from the subfloor and allow the new mortar to bond. Floor tiles can be installed directly onto a concrete subfloor. Whether wooden or concrete, make sure your subfloor is clean and free of debris.

Laying out your tile pattern, planning for fixtures, cabinets, etc. There are many patterns to choose from, though some work better with specific tile shapes and sizes.

Depending on the toolkit you have at hand, you could either try a sander with medium to coarse sandpaper or a grinding disc. You should, however, act with extra caution so as not to damage the integrity of your old tiling. Important: Always inspect for empty space behind old tiles. To do this, simply knock on each piece with your hand and listen out for hollow sounds.

Areas with hollow space are easy to spot, but beware — if you fail to spot these and tile over them anyway, you run the risk of having your fresh tiles collapse in the relatively near future. Once done, clean the surface from dust, dry any signs of moisture and apply the adhesive.

Fill in any cracks or holes from pins, nails or any other type of wall fitting, apply the primer, leave it to dry, sand one more time, and then apply the adhesive. The truth is that plywood is suitable for tiling your floors but not as practical when it comes to walls. The material is made of compressed wood mixed with various oils, which means that heat can affect it. If exposed to frequent and dramatic changes in temperature, tiles and grout will likely crack.

When it comes to walls, tiles offer far more longevity and practicality than wallpaper , and the best option is to remove wallpaper wherever possible. The most efficient and hassle-free way is by exposing the room to steam — but this approach does come with some risks.
