Resident Evil Revelations. Top 10 Nintendo 3DS Games. We rank the best of the best for Nintendo's newest handheld. After a slow launch, a dismal first summer and a drastic, course-correcting price cut, Nintendo's newest handheld, the 3DS, began to recover and finally prove its potential.
The drama of those events is now more than a year behind us, and since the system found its footing we've been treated to more and more quality pieces of software. Now, as the system steps into its next chapter with the release of the 3DS XL, we've decided it's time for our first list of the handheld's best titles. That's value. New Super Mario Bros. Released May 19, Watch Gameplay Mario's long-awaited return to 2D platforming is easily one of the best efforts the genre has ever seen.
The power of the Nintendo DS made new gameplay elements possible like deforming terrain, giant 3D enemies and obstacles, and fully rotating environments. Giant Mario is one of the most delightful variations of the plumber we've ever had the pleasure of controlling. There is a load of secret content to explore in New Super Mario Bros. And indeed, it was a very cool throwback kind of GTA. But even though it had cartoony style and played similar to the original GTAs, it still had the great story and immersive world.
Elite Beat Agents Released November 8, Favorite Memory Inis already wowed the gaming public with a rhythm game called Osu! But this Japanese import was exactly that: heavily Japanese. It wouldn't have stood a chance on shelves in the US. But it was fantastic to see Nintendo step in and commission Inis to take the game and modify it for a North American audience.
There were new songs, new scenarios, and new characters, but that rhythm gameplay remained. Elite Beat Agents wasn't exactly a massive success for Nintendo so a sequel is very unlikely. Still, it's one of those gems in the DS library that you really need to track down. I was addicted to that game. Part of the reason it kept me so enthralled for months was that I could earn experience by not playing it. So I never felt like I was neglecting the game when I would take a week off to play something else.
Dozens of hours in I was still as engrossed as the first moment I loaded it up. No RPG has ever grabbed me and held me for as long as this game did. Favorite Memory I play a lot of DS games on the train, but Spirit Tracks was one of those titles that I had to sit down at home to play, for a few reasons. It was too engrossing to play for just a few minutes at a time, and it was also challenging enough that I didn't want to swear on a crowded commuter car.
But most importantly, I couldn't use that damn Spirit Flute because the train is too loud. Nintendo figured out the perfect combination to get me to become a homebody to play a portable video game. Favorite Memory I'm one of the many people championing to get Bowser his own video game. The game ended up the best of the bunch, not just because you played as the Super Mario nemesis, but also because it was riotously hilarious and a fantastic continuation of the Alphadream-developed role-playing game design.
Now we just need a game where you play as Bowser a hundred percent of the time. Favorite Memory I couldn't wait to play SoulSilver when it came out. Literally, I couldn't wait, and so I imported the Japanese version. For any other RPG this would have been a major issue, what with me not knowing any Japanese, but the nostalgia saved me. Memories of playing the Game Boy Color original came flooding back, and I was able to beat the Elite Four and catch some of my all time favorite Pokemon.
And when it came to the US I bought it and beat it all over again! It really is the best Pokemon game ever. Picross DS Released July 30, Favorite Memory Having covered the Nintendo DS market since the begnning, I get asked all the time what game people should get.
My answer is always the same: Picross. It's not the answer they expect they're really looking for something a little more hardcore , but Picross is the Nintendo DS system's own Tetris: the game everyone should have in their library. Picross 3D is also a fantastic addition, but honestly it's the simplistic original that gets the nod from me.
New Super Mario Bros. Released May 19, I ride public transit to work, and slowly but surely I've seen more people playing videogames on Nintendo's handheld. While this in itself is awesome to see, what always surprised me was that they were always playing NSMB. Whether they were 5 or 50, this game just seems to resonate with the parts of us that never grow up. It was a throwback to the maddening challenge of Castlevanias of old as the new playable character, Shanoa, was brought down again and again by the bloodthirsty demons, beasts and bosses of the latest vision of Dracula's castle and surrounding countryside.
Finishing this quest took dedication, patience, and at least a little bit of personal insanity — we loved every minute of it. Newly revised for ! We rank the best games on Nintendo's original dual-screened handheld and crown a new 1. Posted Aug.
